Knowing You

Since I was a child
I’ve seen my own potential
reflected in your eyes.
You never once told me
I couldn’t be. You showed me
what was already inside.

And now you tell me
that I saved you,
helped you find
the child once lost
inside you.  Your childhood
once stolen from you.

But it is you who taught me
to fill my own spiritual void.
You understood me.  Still do.
I saw you as my guide
through this journey called life.
That has never changed.

But I often wonder,
when you were a child,
did you ever see your own potential
in someone else’s eyes?
Did anyone ever tell you
how beautiful you are inside?

When I see the child inside you,
I see a Deer, peaceful
yet ever watchful,
still and perceptive,
yet quick to run,
for trust was never easy for you.

But I also see what you’ve become.
You are a Wolf, teacher and protector,
willing to teach,
while just as willing
to share the warmth of your coat,
to accept me just as I am.

So you see, when you look in my eyes,
I want you to see your potential, and to know
you are loved just the way you are.
