In the beginning was the Word,
And the Word was with God, and
The Word was God. The same
Was in the beginning with God.
In the beginning was my life:
The years of sad isolation…,
The years of lonely, inner strife,
Were seeds of muted desperation.
My quiet youth was spent alone…,
So I sought comfort in my books
And salvation in strangers’ looks:
My secret wish to be fully known!
How was I to realize or know
That all along you were always there,
To give and to anxiously show
Your matchless love and extra care?
Alone, unguided, and friendless,
I was bleeding and bruising inside
And wore a mask of mirth to hide
The real pain of my loneliness…
But your compassion found me still,
In spite of my persistent grief,
And banished the cold, lonely chill
That pillaged my joy like a thief!
You had become my true first love,
Sent and dispatched from up above!
You restored a new hope in me,
And made me as your sanctuary!
In an instant I was your bride,
Without shame or pain left to hide!
You put a band on my finger
And henceforth we are forever!
I was a child adrift, then:
A youth so sad and pitiful,
A lost chick sans its mother hen!
But your love made me beautiful!
Now, many careworn years later,
As one nearing his aged forties,
I have these precious memories
Of you as heavenly Father!
O Lord, no one’s greater than you!
You are my greatest relationship,
The one thing that’s forever true!
You alone deserve my worship!
You had become my true first love,
Sent and dispatched from up above!
You restored a new hope in me,
And made me as your sanctuary!
In an instant I was your bride,
Without shame or pain left to hide!
You put a band on my finger
And henceforth we are forever!
