Nothing Matters
(January 26, 2009)

I see a glimpse of you,
Wherever I go,
Wherever I turn,
And I wonder are you really here;
Or just a hologram I conjured up in my mind
To make it seem that you care
About me, about us,
About what we can become,
About what we’ve been through.

I wonder why it seems you’re always here,
Yet I can never reach you or catch you.
I wonder how you go on
As if we’ve never met,
As if I don’t exist,
As if nothing matters,
Not I, nor you, nor us,
Not what was or could ever be.

Nothing really matters when it should
Because what matters is not nothing.
It is something with a purpose,
Something deep no matter how simple;
Everything has depth,
Even nothing has depth.

Depth is not nothing,
It is something that nothing holds;
Something that’s there for us to grasp.
But do we want to grasp it?
Do we want to acknowledge it?
This nothing that is something,
This depth that lives inside us,
In mind, body, and spirit,
This depth that can never be left behind --
