reclining
in an old overstuffed
burgundy-red leather armchair, declining
philosophical thoughts, I lose myself
between mellow poetry and sundry grocery lists,
dispersed among avocados and window cleaner,
rhyming aficionados to willow dearer
the recurring heartache of rainy-day grays
buy Paul Simon’s “you’re the one”
and purely romantic effervescent descant blues
where grievances collected like pebbles,
bananas, shrimp cocktail sauce, cloves
or dead branches for ikebana, become
longtime friends of unending checkout lines
soupy/bubbly/bittersweet chocolate
emotion-clad songs, play-listed and personalized,
in not-so-discreet oversized and undisguised
headphones, otherwise silent
alas, uncharged iPods…
no exasperating phone calls today…
while thumb-writing sweet surprising I love you’s
chastising, she asks if I have my discount card —
slick advertising — sorry, miss…
it too has been mysteriously
…placed somewhere among pink/purple/turquoise lists
of elemental things to excavate, unlikely
silver wedding anniversary invitations
the glow of yellowed high school photos
cherry tomatoes, red woolen socks
(new list)” my dreams of paradise”
unlisted…
