I loved reading the poems that Cissy had for this lesson. It is hard to pick a favorite but I choose Children of the Indians. The white man had the children think that the parents had forsaken them. The white man wouldn't let the Indians raise their children like they had been. How did the white man think the Indians managed before they came to America?
I like the lines: The grumbling-the eruption's near We've been silent but now it's time: The earth is rumbling-the awaited sign, For us, the children of the Indians. The Panther streaks across the sky. Tecumseh's footsteps shake the earth. To rise and fight for all it's worth. Because we are the children of the Indians. The last line: We are no longer children-We are the Indians! The Panther is a good touch to the poem. It is like it is the Panther is the symbol that it is time for the Indians to claim what is theirs! The grumble of the earthquakes in another line is the Indians fighting back. This poem was well written Native American poem. I also like the poem Call To The Four Sacred Winds The winds call out to the East, West, all the Native American tribes and calls out to Mother Earth. The bottom line in these two poems is: Native Americans having their freedom. The Native Americans did get their freedom. They had to move Heaven and Earth to do so. I admire the Native Americans for everything they stood for and got back. What stands out in my mind about these poems is that the Native Americans got their freedom back and the panther and earthquakes were very dramatic effects and a good description. The winds call out to them and I think we all feel the wind calls our name sometimes. The Native Americans believe in Spirits. I love how the poems teach a lesson and tell a story. ![]() ![]()
