The Iceberg

The glacier gave birth to its clean, white child.
The deafening, rolling thunder announced its progress to the sea.
A final explosion sent animals seeking a haven from the wild
Artic iceberg whose glory was forever floating free.

April's warm sun was shining on this floating, frozen mass.
Its body was enjoying a continuous, silent swim.
Its beauty was destined to be like nature’s polished glass.
But keeping away from icebergs was part of every sailor’s hymn.

Ice cold waterfalls cascaded down pristine sides that faced the sun.
A powerful current sent this towering figure to the ocean past the bay.
Smaller growlers broke off and began their noisy cries as they begun
Their simple journey before melting under the clouds that ominous day.

A veteran captain looked upon the calm and peaceful ocean
Whose cold air and moonless night made the bridge a peaceful place.
Other iceberg warnings were not given a high degree of emotion
Because the ship’s fine-tuned engines would let it be in port at a record pace.

Rich people danced. Their children slept tight. Yet no one heard a warning sound.
Some people felt the subtle bump of the iceberg which hit the ship’s metal hull
And pushed in its side as the tragedy began. Many observers have found
That the luck of the great cruise ship Titanic, nature would soon annul.

Extra notes:
Growler is a small part of the iceberg that has broken off and is named for the noise it makes as it floats in the wave.

Also on board were many dogs who were scheduled to be in a dog show. Only two dogs lived. They were hidden in the coats of the owners as they got into the rafts. Some dogs perished trying to save their owners in the freezing water.
