The Angel and the Demon
Kim looked over her shoulder for the third time that night, there was no doubting it now; she was being followed. Ok, ok, calm down, she told herself, I’ve planned for this a thousand times. Her trembling hand reached into her black crocodile bag. No! Where is it? The pepper-spray was missing. Panic seized her. She walked faster now, along the deserted village road, praying to god he would turn away. She listened to his steps, heart pounding. His pace quickened. Lord help me! Suddenly, Kim sprinted forward as fast as her thin legs would carry her. ‘I just want to talk with you!’ He yelled. She knew it was a lie; his voice was laced with wicked intent. She ran left off the street, towards the church of St Paul the Baptist. Sprinting under the stone archway, she threw the gates shut behind her. Fleeing up the moonlit path, besides the church, the statue of an angel at prayer caught her eye like a jewel in the rough. She dove for cover behind it. The gate creaked open. Lord, save me, save me, she pleaded, rocking in silence behind the angelic statue’s base. Only the thudding of her beating heart filled her ears. Her black skirt was wet with urine. Then, the unmistakable fall of a foot. It was as loud to her as a drum. Uncontrollable tremors havocked her body. Then, she saw it, the glint of steel in the moon’s ethereal rays. She froze as still as the statue beside her, mind blank with fear. A fox barked across the way and the man turned his gaze towards her. She ducked, covering her mouth, fearful her breathe would be seen in the freezing winter air. “I know you’re here! I just need to ask you something, Kim.” My god, my god. His words lingered in the air, torturing her. The electronic sound of a singing chipmunk cut through the air like a dagger. Her heart near stopped in fright. My celly! She stumbled to her feet, panic taking her utterly. Her scream rent the air. The monster was upon her. He wrenched back her blonde ponytail and forced the cold steel against her delicate neck. He held her tight, and whispered in her ear, “I won’t ‘urt you if ya keep shut.” His cold hand reached into her blouse. “Please, please,” she pleaded, “please, I’m a virgin.”Tears streaked her pale white face. The monster’s smile broadened, enjoying her suffering like a drug. A sadistic fix. “Be a good girl now, Kim, play along.’” His breath reeked of whiskey. The girl sobbed hysterically as he ripped open her blouse. “No, nooo, ” she pleaded. His filthy hand covered her mouth and she tasted his bile. Then, a startling sound alarmed the man. He threw the girl to the floor and leapt on top of her, covering her mouth as he searched the horizon. He gasped in terror, eyes as plates, jaw slack in disbelief. A blinding light filled the sky and the guardian angel turned towards him, basked in a glorious halo. The lichen covered stone was now flesh and bone, the eyes filled with a divine light. Kim screamed as a clap of thunder shook the sky and a bolt of lightening seared the earth. Then, silence came again. Kim opened her ice blue eyes and looked up at the statue. It was no longer at prayer, for now its almighty wings were spread wide towards the heavens, and Kim knew she was saved. 599 words
