Tell Me A Story

Lesson 5 Part 1

Usually legends, like myths, are an attempt by people to explain something that they cannot explain any other way. Legends usually involve some sort of cryptid, but not all of them do. In the case of legends such as Champ, Big Foot, or the Loch Ness Monster, the legend stems from an attempt to explain something that has been seen. In the case of legends such as the Chupacabra, the effects of the cryptid were unexplainable in other ways. I think another impetus behind many legends is to prove that science does not have an explanation for everything. Indeed, science does not. Science itself is a process of discovery – for instance, we now know that the Earth is not flat. Part of the attraction of legends is that we are fascinated by things we cannot understand and with the idea that something, however gruesome, may be out there for which we have no explanation yet.
