ETERNALLY YOURS

Shadows on the lake, mist swirling through the air,
You are so many miles away, yet I know you care.
In my heart you will always be, soldier tall and strong,
I will be eternally yours, for it's with you that I belong.

I walk along the path where we first met and kissed,
It's these times I realize how much you are missed.
You stand your ground, you do your best to reassure
That danger is not so great, yet I know there's more.

You tell me that your buddies are a comfort to you,
More like brothers, you all do what you must do.
An army wife always knows that freedom is not free,
So I keep praying that you'll come home safe to me.

I need your arms around me, need to feel your touch.
I'd run my fingers through your hair, I love you so much.
Your smile always lit up my life, I hope it doesn't change
Into a smile of bitterness, for that would be so strange.

You see the horrors of the war and some cannot forget
The faces of the dying, friend or foe, someone you met
That reminded you of home and the need to carry on,
Another flag-draped coffin, it's so hard to be strong.

There are no answers to my prayers tonight, my love,
Your voice fades on midnight air that swirls above.
Shadows on the lake disappear in the darkness now
And I walk the path back home, not alone somehow.

For you are always in my heart and close at hand,
Perhaps only you will read this and understand.
My love for you will see you safely back home to me.
Until then I hold you close, a long-distance memory.

Shadows on the lake, mist swirling through the air,
You are so many miles away, yet I know you care.
In my heart you will always be, soldier tall and strong,
I will be eternally yours, for it's with you that I belong.
