 The Blackened Birds Rated:

History's terrors become mere words on pages we can choose not to read...

Look at this horror,
The blackened birds are falling
From the orange sky.

They cannot escape
The turbulent fiery smoke
Which consumes their lives.

Volcanic roaring
Numbs and overwhelms senses
Of terrified victims.

A blasting furnace
Driven by ferocious winds
Leaves nothing alive.

Caught by its fury,
Humans, animals and trees
Incinerated.

And when the fires cease,
Our land lies dead and empty
As our grieving souls.

Yet we soon forget
All the indescribable
Terrors of nature.

We humans forget,
So we can drift away from
Life's realities.

For nature brings death
In many terrible ways
We cannot cope with.

Our only escape
From nature's indifference
Is by forgetting.

Nor can culture bear
Nature's brutal dominance.
It also forgets.

History's terrors
Become mere words on pages
We don't have to read.

Yet in forgetting
We tragically re-create
Ourselves as victims.

For the time will come
When we see the blackened birds
Falling yet again.
