Prejudice

When I say
my grandchild's name
it sits safe in my mouth,
no ragged epithet
no sharp-edged slur
to slice the throat, the heart.

A warm song
of minor sirens
and lesser gods,
chanting unaware
of holding illusions
till they're gone.
