                                       Old walls spotted and cracked with time,
                                       A worn and marred dark brown table,
                                       A couple of chairs, fabric split,
                                       And the echo throughout the space,
                                       The soundings of what life offered
                                       Reverberating surroundings.
                                       Tea leaked from a split in the cup;
                                       Drips puddled in time forgotten
                                       Will form the clean spot on the floor,
                                       If he chooses to wipe it dry.

                                       Oddly, there came a strange rapping.
                                       It was an unfamiliar sound,
                                       This tapping on the old front door.
                                       He had heard it once, lone ago;
                                       The unlocking with the knocking
                                       On the peeling gray coat of paint,
                                       Small flecks falling with the creaking.
                                       Wind caught the face, gray peeled in sheets;
                                       Beneath the gray, steel became gold,
                                       And the gold spread across the walls.

                                       The old table sparkled with gems,
                                       And the old split chairs became thrones.
                                       The space filled with happy laughter;
                                       The soundings of what life offered
                                       Reverberating surroundings.
                                       The floor of glossy white marble
                                       Gleamed in the glow of the new day.
                                       Teacups of the finest china
                                       Flowed with the wisps of hot Earl Grey.
                                       A portrait adorned the gold wall;

                                       The queen smiled down at the setting,
                                       Her hand gleamed with the solitaire,
                                       The emerald cut stone of his love.
                                       The castle glowed with her beauty,
                                       And loving her made him a king.
                                       The gold door creaked late one cold night
                                       As the king slept with blissful dreams.
                                       He awoke to old dirty floors
                                       A portrait adorned the cracked wall,
                                       Her hand gleamed with the solitaire.
