Fern flew over the mountains playfully as down below Marhak watched in wonder at what he was witnessing. It had only been a week since the old man in the square had told him about this amazing creature and he still could not believe that he had actually met one. He had even ridden on his back. As Fern Swooped and rolled, turning one way then the other his multicolour scales shone as the light of the two suns hit them.
***** After a few minutes Fern Swooped down and landed a few feet away from Marhak. ‘It is time Marhak’ Marhak looked around to see where the voice was coming from. ‘It is me Marhak, Fern. I can communicate with your kind through speech and to a select few like you I can communicate telepathically. Marhak looked at Fern who had lowered his head so it was level with his. ‘What is it time for?’ he asked. ‘Time for you to learn about who you are and your destiny. Please gather some twigs and I’ll get us some food.’ Marhak scanned the area around him and spotted an area with a few trees. Getting up he headed over to them picking up all the twigs he could carry. As he headed back to the spot he had been sitting he watched Fern dive down to the water then swoop back into the sky holding a fish in each of his 4 clawed feet and one even in his mouth. He placed the twigs in a pile on the ground just as Fern flew over head dropping the fish from his mouth before breathing fire that lit the twigs instantly. Fern circled around allowing the flames to die down before flying back over to the fire, dropping the remaining four fish on it and landing next to Marhak as he placed the fifth fish on the fire. ***** Marhak watched as the ball floated in the air above him. Something in the distance caught his eye making him lose concentration and the ball fell bouncing off his head. He had only had the power a short time and had spent all day practicing next to Dragon Lake. ‘What did I tell you about concentration’ said a voice that came from inside his head. ‘Sorry Fern. I’m trying.’ He replied in his thoughts as a dragon landed a few feet away. It was getting late and the two suns were starting to set over the mountains. ‘It’s getting late; I should be getting you back home.’ Getting up, Marhak picked up the ball and walked along the lake’s edge allowing the water to lap at his feet. Making his way towards his newly arrived friend he looked out across the water, watching the fish as they jumped out of the water, splashing back down making ripples that shimmered in the late evening sun. His eyes fixed on one of the fish, Marhak concentrated. With his mind he controlled its thrashing and brought it towards the shore. ‘Well done Marhak. Now let’s get moving.’ Marhak, placing the fish in the cloth bag that was over his shoulder walked over to where Fern was waiting. ***** As the suns set over the impassable mountains, Fern, Marhak sitting on his back, flew towards the town of Edville. Soaring across the sky casting his large shadow in the moonlight Fern flew on over fields. ‘Remember no one can know of your powers until we can trust them.’ ‘I know Fern, but how can I practice if I cannot do it at home?’ ‘You can as long as you can keep it secret.’ 'I'll only practice in my room away from everyone else.'
