FOREWORD

Painting life in words
making words alive
we reach that place apart
and travel the silent roads
between life and language
with the parts of us that sing.

                             — a compilation by some of the poets in this volume

The challenges in trying to define poetry are as multifarious as the challenges in trying to define humanity and life, for both are inextricably interwoven. Poetry embodies the individual expression of one’s humanity through the course of time and experience in life, and in symmetry, the individual expression of one’s humanity through time and experience in life engenders poetry.

Poetry is, then, as open ended as life itself. The poet is that rare artisan who lives between life and language, transforming life into language and living language as life. The poet enters that place apart and travels the silent roads between life and language, laboring to bring to us each new treasure of word-art, some painted, some sculpted, some composed, some evolved, but all in words.

This exciting volume of poetry is a glimpse into the diverse and variegated word-art of a number of these rare artisans who seek to bring us life in words. Please relax and enjoy the variety of topics, forms, styles and voices in this anthology: Between Life and Language.

Most of the poems in this anthology were selected from the entries for the Pride in Poetry Prize, an annual prize hosted by NavWorks Press. Other poems appearing were selected to round out the volume.

The winners of the Pride in Poetry Prize were classified into three tiers, the First Tier Top 20, the Second Tier of 32 other equal winners, and the final tier of Honorable Mentions.

Poems were evaluated based on their overall quality, use of poetic technique, internal consistency, emotional appeal, intellectual stimulation, inspirational impact, originality, and use of language.

                                                                                         —David E. Navarro
