A PROMISE BROKEN
There was once a blind girl who Hated all in the world, Except a boyfriend who was Around her finger curled. She was enamoured of him, But so she used to say: If ever I get my eyes I’d marry you that day. Time passed and somehow the boy Arranged secretly so That his eyes he donated; To the girl did they go. When the girl could see again, She looked for her boyfriend. But, finding that he was blind, She was shocked to no end. He asked for her hand but she Refused without remorse. Marrying a blind boy would Be a suicidal course! Blindness was the biggest curse. She knew, she had been blind. How could she, with someone blind, Her future ever bind? Without a second thought she Declined to marry him. He was taken aback by Her selfish, cruel whim. So, with his eyes full of tears, He went away for good, Saying, he hoped, of his eyes, Take proper care she would. • Written in abcb, 7-6-7-6 syllabic format. M C Gupta 11 March 2009
