THE LAKE AND THE MOON
What the moon’s shadow in the lake says.

THE LAKE AND THE MOON

Standing by the calm lakeside,
As it reflects pale moonlight,
I am lost in memories
Of my old turbulent days.

But, lo! What is this I find,
As I see the moon shadow?
It’s spots rearrange into
A face that’s familiar!

Do I recognize the eyes?
Do I know the curve of lips?
Who is sending me that smile,
And a sweet heavenly kiss?

Oh, yes. It is you my dear,
Just as you were that first night,
When we walked here hand in hand,
And, instantly, you were mine.

Yes, I know you’re calling me.
No, I won’t wait a moment.
Here I come, wait my darling,
You and I will be but one.

But, no, who’s holding me back?
Whose hands are that grip my arm?
Who prevents me from my chance
To meet, once more, my dear wife?

Where have you disappeared now?
What cloud has covered your face?
Oh, yes, you’re in shadows now,
Beckoning me from behind?

It is at this moment I
Realize your faint presence.
Down from skies to lake waters,
You have come to tell me this:

“I know that you loved me deep
And want to be with me now.
But keep up with your journey,
I am with you till the end.”
