Timeless Love

There hangs a painting on the wall that’s cracked and glued in place,
this face of love stares back at me in full and somber grace.

Her flashing eyes and gentle smile has filled my eyes with tears,
for I remember in my heart those soft and gentle years.

Ages past and far away in a land and time of fear,
we played and danced and sang our songs and held each other near.

Life to us was fun and games and stories told all day,
neither fear of death nor evil thoughts could catch us in their sway.

For many days and many nights we let our love run free,
our life together and sacred love would span eternity.

But over the course of many years our fortune finally fled,
for in my arms one dreadful night my love was lying dead.

Evil men with evil souls had torn her life asunder,
on a wet and raining night amid the roar of violent thunder.

Shining crosses and darkened hoods were foremost in the lead,
for men of God not men of war had done this ghastly deed.

A wretched curse upon the king they said that she did thrust,
but in my heart and in my mind I knew his evil lust.

For many days and many years he had sought her hand to wed,
but her love for me, and sacred vows were things she would not shed.

Anger seethed and burned my mind that men of God would seek,
to serve a king of evil deeds whose very soul did reek.

I made a vow that very night as my eyes begin to clear,
that the holy men and evil king would learn of death and fear.

I kept that vow over many years and the fires of hell were fed;
now the evil king and all his monks sleep close in Satan’s bed.

There hangs a painting on the wall that’s cracked and glued in place,
such sadness rife in my beating heart five hundred years did trace.

For this painting on the wall hung high for all to see,
holds for me - in another life - my love eternally.

Note:
*** such sadness rife in my beating heart
