Hi! My name is Mike and I'd like to welcome you to Writing.com!
I remember when I first joined, not knowing what to expect. There are a lot of great groups of people here that can make the journey more enjoyable. This site offers quite a bit of activity and plenty of reading material. I hope you enjoy this site as much as I have. It has been a learning experience. There is a group on here called The Writer's Academy that can assist your learning process. The Academy is definitely worth checking out if you want to continue improving your skills. You will also find plenty of forums and groups that may specialize in what you're looking for.
I am a member of the Angel Army, a group that strives to promote a positive environment here on WDC. I'm sure you will get to meet several of us in this forum. The Angels are one of the best and most respected groups on this site. They are also one of the largest, with membership in the hundreds. I belonged to them once before and had to leave because of personal reasons. When I returned, they welcomed me back with open arms. You should definitely check them out if you get a chance. If you do, contact iKïyå§ama. Tell her I sent you. It's a few moments you won't regret.
I also belong to the groups Simply Positive, Simply Positive Newbie Reviewers and Just Because I Want To. They are made up of wonderful people that help to promote a positive experience here on Writing.com. They offer the chance to read and review both new and long term members as well as hosting a myriad of activities such as review challenges or auctions/raffles hosted by members. I highly recommend checking them out. If interested, contact SherriGiblet ~Thankful~. She is the founder and top leader of all three of these groups. She'll be happy to sign you up!
I have been chosen as a Rising Star, sponsored by the wonderful SherriGiblet ~Thankful~, and on March 10th, 2009 was bestowed the honor and privilege of being promoted to Preferred Author status. It was a truly special and unexpected surprise. The same things can happen to you as well. The only thing you need to do is spend time on this site and interact in a positive manner while you are here. Someone may take notice of you as they did me. Do not campaign for such designations. Trust me, they feel so much better when you don't expect them to happen! The most important thing is to have fun!
There is always something interesting going on that you might enjoy, not only from these groups but many others as well. A lot of groups promote others within their pages. I have my own review based group called Knights of the Review Table that offers a relaxed approach to reviewing. WDC has a family type atmosphere and just about everyone you meet here is willing to lend a hand if you need guidance. As a new member, it may be a good idea to find a mentor who can help you as you embark on your journey through the WDC world. There is a program called Adopt-A-Newbie that may interest you. Not only do you get paired with someone to help you, but you might make a friend in the process.
If you need any assistance I will try to help out the best I can. Feel free to contact me. Have a great day and keep that writing going! Peace.

Here is something for all of you to check out. It is my opinion of Writing.com. It offers reassurance to new members.
In case you were thinking to yourself, "What's with all the different colors, smileys and fonts?!", I did that on purpose to demonstrate several examples of WDC's WritingML that is used by members of this site. I want to share this link with you:
It explains how to post your work in forums by using the bitem format. It also has sections that will explain WritingML further. I hope this helps you out.
