The Earth in Spring

It’s time. I don’t want it to be. I feel safe, snuggled in the earth. But it is time. Spring time.

Slowly, I push my way up, struggling against the ground which has kept me safe. Peeking out, I feel the warmth of the sun. It draws me out, for it is like nothing I have ever felt before. I turn towards it, a wonderful sensation flows through me.

Alive. I feel alive and refreshed! The ground had been cold and damp. Looking back, it feels more like I had been in a prison and now I am free.

Free to stretch myself. I must get more sun! I extend myself upwards and outwards so I can soak up more of this glorious energy. As I do, I realize I am also stretching below, deeper into the ground. A slightly tingling sensation flows up me as a different energy is absorbed.

I struggle to find the words to describe what is happening to me. A calm, cooling energy from below. A vitalizing, warm energy from above. They combine to give me the strength to reach my full potential.

As I sit here, enjoying everything there is to being me, a large flying creature comes buzzing towards me. I shy away, scared of this unknown being.

As it nears though, it buzzes a friendly greeting, asking me if it may rest for a moment.

Wanting to be hospitable, I open fully and allow it to land. At first it is still, but then it moves around slightly, which tickles my top. As I sway with laughter, it rises and hovers in midair.

Buzzing an apology, it flies away. Left alone, I ponder the buzzer, as I have come to call it for the sound it makes. I did not understand what it had wanted, and I am afraid I scared it off. Hopefully, it will come back so I may make amends.

All of a sudden the ground shakes, rattling me to the core. I look about frantically, but can’t locate the source of the quaking earth. It stops as suddenly as it started. Still I can’t see anything unusual.

I wish I was back in the ground, safe from such bizarre happenings. I try to relax. Feeling a slight breeze, I let its caress soothe me.

I am almost at peace when the sun abruptly disappears. A giant being is standing over me, casting me into darkness. I shiver in fear as it reaches down and grabs me, pulling me out of the ground.

Energy draining, I feel weak.

The being holds me up to the sun, blinding me from the sudden change in light. It pulls me close to it. I feel a breeze suck me towards two hairy holes in it. Then the breeze pushes me back.

Ebbing… My strength slowly flows from me. I droop a little and then feel pain shoot up me as a part of me falls away.

The being drops me as suddenly as it picked me up. As I fall, my last thoughts are how wonderful it had been to be alive and then how glad I am to be back on the ground.
