In this article, I shall write about the French thought in politics in the late 17th and 18th centuries. I would particularly focus on a great preacher and priest - Bossuet, Jacques (1738 - 1704).

Bossuet is an asset to the Royal Chapel because of his “theological political contributions.” His work was entitled “La Politique Tirée d l’Ecriture Sainte” which translates to “Politics Drawn from Holy Scriptures.”

His philosophy was a praise of absolute monarchy.

!!You’ve read it right. I understand how modern people hate a monarchial system and, this guy actually praises it!!

Bossuet believed that a ruler should be like God. Since God is the only powerful being in this universe then it follows, a ruler is the only authority in a state. Why should this be so? This is because order can only exist if only one voice is ruling.

Since God is omnipotent, all-knowing and super-intelligent, then, it follows, a ruler should be intelligent and knows the ins0and0outs of the state. Why should this be so? This is because; exemplary statesmanship can only exist if the statesman (ruler) is well equipped with knowledge.

Bossuet laid four foundations for humanity to follow. First, all subjects (people who are ruled over) are slaves. Second, no one has property. Third, the ruler has the right to kill. Fourth, the only rule is the ruler’s will.

These foundations may sound “tyrannical” but the main point is: If a ruler is indeed like God, the subjects and the people have nothing to fear and should completely obey the rule.
