Winter Flood
A poem written about how record snowfalls in North Dakota have turned into floods.

The snow which had stayed for so long,
Finally begins to shrink.
The streets which were cut down in size,
Have visible curbs once again.

The grass takes a gasping breath,
As the white makes its departure.
I can finally walk on it once more,
Without being cold up to my waist.

Shovels go in the garage,
It felt like we'd need them forever
Plowing machines go back in the shop
We were grateful for your services, all winter long.

Coats go in the closet, along with mittens and hats.
Shorts replace jeans, tanktops replace hoodies
The weather is 80, 90 degrees warmer than the coldest point,
And no, that's no joke.

But it hasn't truly left us yet,
As river waters rise.
Puddles replace snow drifts,
Mud replaces ice.

Far away, a river is forty above flood stage,
As a city fights for its life.
The troubles are distant from us,
Yet we feel them just the same.

And now here they come,
The flooding is headed for us too!
Quick, fill sandbags everyone!
Toss them, hurry! Hurry!

Although I live on a hill,
Far away from water,
Just miles away,
Someone is on a raft.

It was an epic winter, no doubt about that.
With snow, and makeup days, and ice all about.
But now we have just one more hurdle, the flood which remains.
We'll get past it, and be home free for the summer.
