Shopping Tips for a Greener Environment (Fight Global Warming!)
#1 Buy in bulk
-This means that when you go shopping, you should purchase the largest size for the product you are about to buy. Instead of buying a 180 ml Sprite, why not buy a 1 liter Sprite. Buying in bulk also implies that you buy your groceries for a month at once. Instead of visiting your supermarket every week, why not go once every two weeks or even better – once a month. The rationale behind this is that every time you buy small sizes of shampoos or soaps, it uses packaging material. So, 2 500 ml Sprite uses two bottles which more than a 1 litter bottle of Sprite. Same with the frequency of your supermarket visit. If you visit every week, you would accumulate 4 plastic bags a month. If you visit once a month- you’ll only get to use 1 for the entire month!
#2 Bring your bags
-If the clerk is going to pack your paid goods, tell them that you brought your bag. Just get the receipt and go home. Especially if you’re just going to buy a bottle of mineral water at some convenience store. Do Mother Nature a favor and reject the plastic bag, just carry it with you. In case you’re going to buy more than you can carry, bring a bag. And also SM nowadays, has this so called SM Green Bag! It allows you to save earth. Green Bag is a reusable bag that is durable. The less bags you use, the less co2 you emit to the ozone layer.
#3 Buy recycled materials
-Buy materials that are made from recycled stuff. Don’t buy pure new materials. There are lots of Intermediate Papers or any Office papers that are made from 100% recycled materials these days. And don’t think that these materials are of low quality… Some of them were made to look just like made from fresh raw materials. Also buy second hand items like – if you were planning to buy wood for a wood craft project, then go to a place were there woods that were thrown away. You don’t only get them at a cheaper price, buy you also help save the trees. Same thing goes with clothes… and electronics… A lot of these stuff are branded “second hand” but look and are still brand as new!
