MY VIEW OF FREYTAG AFTER MY FIRST SHORT STORY ATTEMPT SINCE 12th GRADE (32 years!!)
What a scary title that is!! It made me spontaneously sprout grey hairs. Actually, I liked the structure and focus of the Freytag model as I plotted my attack on the Stone Soup adventure. It gave me purpose and direction when all I had was basic content, and all I could come up with were morality statements and sweet gooey sentiments about feeding the hungry and doing good to ones fellow hungry soul. It kept me on task toward producing something beyond myself and my views on hunger and social justice. I am grateful at least starting out in fiction to have something to hang my hat, or at least my pen, on!! I see it as a help and a tool, not as a constraint; a smooth, mapped pathway to walk on and not some sort of difficult obstacle in the road to my writinng!
