                                          Ghazal 269


Persian:  Ba chashm karda am abroo e maahseemaay
              Khayaal e sarvqaday naqsh basta am jaay
Urdu:      Nigaah maen meri abroo e maahseema hay
              Khayaal maen meray her waqt sarv e baala hay

English:=== The beauty of moon in her face I see
                  She is slim and trim like a cypress tree
                                                -

Persian:  Zamaam e dil ba kasay daada am mun e miskeen
              Keh neestash ba kas az taaj o takht parwaay
Urdu:      Lagaam di hay usay taeri aey dil e miskeen
              Na takht o taaj ki kerta koie jo parwa hay

English:=== She is also a queen who has control
                  On my heart, and body, and mind, and soul
                                                -

Persian:  Saram zay dast shud o chashm zantazaar basookht
              Dar aarzoo e sar o chashm e majlisaaraay
Urdu:      Hawaas sar say gaiay, chashm e intazaar jali
              Hua jo shoaq o sar e chahm e majlisaara hay

English:=== My yearning and craving oh, how I hate
                  But I have no choice; I wait and wait

Persian:  Zahay kamaal keh manshoor e ishqbaazi e mun
              Az aan kamaanchah e abroo rasad ba taghraay
Urdu:      Zahay kamaal keh manshoor ishqbaazi ka
              Kamaan e abroo say bhaija mujhay ba taghra hay

English:=== And though the chances are very remote
                  I can't help hoping she'll write me a note

Persian:  Mara keh az rukh e to maah dar shabistaanast
              Kuja bawad ba faroogh e sitareh parwaay
Urdu:      Hay maahrukh tera jab say meray shabistaan maen
              Faroagh e najm say koie rahi na patwa hay

                  And brighten my life with her glowing face

Persian:  Mukaddar ast dil, aatish ba khirqa khaaham sookht
              Bia babeen to agar meekuni tamaashaay
Urdu:      Charaaghaan khirqa jala ker kya hay mehfil ko
              Too aa kay daekh ager daekhna tamaasha hay

English:=== My heart is aflame with a burning desire
                  I wish she would come to enjoy the fire

Persian:  Ba rooz e waaqa'a taaboot e ma zay sarv kuneed
              Keh murdaeem ba daagh e bulandbaalaay
Urdu:      Maroun toe maeray liay howay sarv ka taaboot
              Keh qalb maen meray daagh e bulandbaala hay

English:=== From the prison of life when I'm free
                  Please make my coffin from a cypress tree

Persian:  Dar aan muqaam keh khoobaan ba ghamza teegh zanand
              Ajab makun zay saray koo fitaadeh dar paay
Urdu:      Karay hay qatl ager taegh e ghamza e khoobaan
              Ajab na jaan jo maqtool bai sar o pa hay

English:=== Because my girl is tall and slim
                  And I'm a victim of her vagary and whim

Persian:  Firaaq o wasl cheh baashad, riza e doost talab
              Keh haif baashad az o ghair e o tamannaay
Urdu:      Firaaq o wasl haen kya, ker raza e dost talab
              Keh kufr kerna alaawa az een tamanna hay

English:=== And though she gives me a lot of pain
                  I'm so much in love, I cannot complain

Persian:  Zay shooq sar badar aarand maahiaan az aab
              Agar safeena e HAFIZ rasad ba daryaay
Urdu:      Hazaar machliaan uchhli haen daekhnay kay liay
              Hua safeena e HAFIZ jo zaib e darya hay

                  In the verses of HAFIZ I find my peace
