                                          Ghazal 272


Persian:  Bulbul zay shaakh e sarv ba gulbaang e Pehlavi
              Meekhaand doosh dars e muqaamaat e ma'anawi
Urdu:      Bulbul ba shaakh e sarv, ba gulbaag e Pehlavi
              Perhhta hay baithha dars e muqaamaat e ma'anwi

English:=== A nightingale sitting on a cypress tree
                  Was asking the folks to come and see
                                                  -

Persian:  Yaani bia keh aatish e Moosa namood gul
              Ta az darakht nukta e tehqeeq bashnawi
Urdu:      Aa aur daekh aatish e gul ta darakht say
              Mil jaat tujh ko nukta e tehqeeq e Moosawi

English:=== With the aid of breeze, with its pull and push
                  How the fire of spring was burning the bush
                                                  -

Persian:  Murghaan e baagh qaafia sanjand o bazla goo
              Ta khaaja mai khurad ba ghazalha e Pehlavi
Urdu:      Murgh e chaman hay qaafiasanj o latifago
              Ta khaaja mai piay ba ghazalha e Pehlavi

English:=== The birds were singing and flying in the air
                  And the topers were sitting and drinking everywhere
                                                  -

Persian:  Jumsheed juz hikaayat e jaam az jahaan naburd
              Zinhaar dil maband bar asbaab e dunyawi
Urdu:      Jum ko ba juz hikaayat e saaghar mila na kuchh
              zinhaar dil laga na ba asbaab e dunyawi

English:=== But the worldly splendor you cannot trust
                  Even the glorious Jum is lying in the dust
                                                  -

Persian:  Khush farsh e boorya o gadaaie o khaab e amn
              Keen aish neest darkhur e aurang e khusravi
Urdu:      Khush farsh e borya o faqeeri o itminan
              Yeh aish kis ko daeta hay aurang e khusravi

English:=== When there's peace of mind, even a seat of stone
                  Is better than the thorny royal throne
                                                  -

Persian:  Durweesham o gada o baraabar namikunam
              Pashmeen kulaah e khessh ba sad taaj e khusravi
Urdu:      Durwaishi o faqeeri maen fursat mujhay bohat
              Behtar naheen kuleh say meri taaj e khusravi

English:=== You would rather be happy and be a clown
                  Than have the woes of a kingly crown
                                                    -

Persian:  Enn qissa e ajab shuno, az bakht e waazhgoon
              Ma ra ba kusht yaar ba anfaas e Eesawi
Urdu:      Hay kis qadar ajeeb maseehaaie yaar ki
              Kerta hat qatl hum ko ba anfaas e Eesawi

English:=== Your gal, like Jesus, does give you life
                  But then she kills you without a knife
                                                    -

Persian:  Chashmat ba ghamza khaana e mardum kharab kard
              Makhmooriyat mabaad keh khushmast meerawi
Urdu:      Afsoon e chashm say hua khaanakharaab maen
              Mujh ko khumaar daeti hay mustoun ki paerawi

English:=== When drinking with you, she's an immense joy
                  But when she is coy, she can also destroy
                                                    -

Persian:  Mai khur ba shaer e banda keh diltangeeyat mabaad
              Ba'ad az to khaak bar ar e asbaab e dunyawi
Urdu:      Pee aur shaer sun keh rahay ta na gham koie
              Sub daal khaak maen too yeh asbaab e dunyawi

English:=== And when she drinks and sings the verse
                  She becomes the queen of the universe
                                                    -

Persian:  Saaqi magar wazeefa e HAFIZ ziyaadeh daad
              Kaashufta gasht turra e dastaar e moolawi
Urdu:      Saaqi nay kuchh ziyaada hi mai di hay HAFIZA
              Aashufta daekh kaisi hay dastaar e maulawi

English:=== And looking in your eyes when she serves the wine
                  HAFIZ, you should see her, she looks so divine
                                                  ====
