The Parkade
Mary blows a gasket. Daily Flash Fiction - 5/21

This was Mary's first trip to the big city. Gil, her husband of twenty-five years, however, was a seasoned veteran. His work saw him in the big city several times each year. The downtown was crowded with cars, and parking was at a premium. But Gil's experience told him the large car parkade in the middle of the downtown core would have spaces available.

The parkade was a wonder of the 1950's – seven floors of parking spaces for cars to sit, while their owners could enjoy the sights of the city center. Its double spiral design, allowed cars to ease from floor to floor until a vacant parking stall presented itself.

Mary was unaware of the parkade's design. After circling the first level, and finding no parking, Gil took the car to the second level, but still no empty stall. Mary thought, I feel like I've been here before.

Now to the third level, with still no parking in sight – on to the fourth, and Mary once again thought, I feel like I've been here before.

By the time they reached the fourth level, she knew, "We've been here before," she shouted at Gil. "You didn't find a parking spot on the first three times around. What makes you think you will find one now. We'll be here all day, if you just keep driving around in circles." She never realized they were now four stories above street level and still climbing.

You can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl.
