Oh no, there’s Brenda. She’s with her mom and dad. What do I do? Do I run away and pretend I didn’t see her? Or should I try again? I’m getting tired of trying.
Nothing I do seems to make her want to like me. I’ve tried just about everything, and still she hates me. I don’t think her mom and dad like me either. I just can’t get her out of my mind. I think about her day and night. I even dream about her. I love her flaming red hair; I love her horn rimmed glasses; I love her braces; I love her freckles. What can I do to make her like me? I punched her in the arm – twice. That didn’t work. She just slapped my face and kicked me. I thought she was showing me she liked me too. But she screamed and ran off to play with her friends. Then there was the time I put gum in her hair. It made her look like the girl in “There’s Something About Mary” with that goo in her hair. Mom told me that was gum. I thought Brenda would like that, but it didn’t work. She said she was going to tell her mom. I don’t know why the teacher shouted at me. It was none of her business. I really thought she would like me, the day I pushed her down in the playground. I didn’t think she would bleed that easy. The ambulance sounds cool when it’s close up. I tried calling her names – grill face, dumbo, four eyes, freckle face, ugly puss. I thought girls liked it when you gave them a nickname. Mom likes it when dad calls her a nickname. I really thought hiding her runners would do it. But I ended up in the principal’s office. Boy was my mom mad at me. I still can’t remember where I hid them. I threw my pencil at her during class one day. But the sharp end stuck in her leg and she shouted at me. Then I had to stand in the hallway. I didn’t know the school nurse could run that fast. I liked her bandage, but she wouldn’t let me touch it. I rigged her locker one day, so that when she opened it, the door would fall on the floor. But it fell on her foot instead, and broke it. I think the cast looks neat, but she won’t let me sign it. I don’t know how many times I have tripped her when she walked down the hall. She really has a temper. Three times, I jumped from behind the door and shouted, “rrraaaa”. I sure scared her, but she hit me and ran away from me. My friends say my black eye looks cool. OK, I’ll try one more time. I saved it for a rainy day, just like mom said. And it's raining today. I’m going to run up to her and give her my favorite lollipop and tell her, “I like you, so there.” But this is the last time. If this doesn’t work, I’ll try Valerie. Here I go. (526 words)
