The Two of Me


Easy-going, confidant, athletic:
Admirable qualities I like to see in others.
Perhaps, some people see those in me --
at least, in one of me.

Scared, insecure, helpless:
Negative qualities I don’t like to see in others.
I hope people don’t see those in me --
in the real me.

I pass through life with both personalities
seeking ascendance. It is a never-ending war.
Either side may win or lose a battle --
the battle for me.

I try to present the confidant me in public;
for the most part I am successful.
Occasionally, I am ambushed, taken off guard --
the real me takes over.

Leading separate lives together is difficult.
Always, I’m looking over my shoulder,
or, feeling the ground ahead for mines.
The two of me become confused.
