                                          Ghazal 278


Persian:  Chun dar jahaan e khoobi imrooz kaamgaari
              Shayad keh aashiqaan ra kaamay zay lab bar aarie
Urdu:      Hay jab jahaan e khoobi maen tujh ko naamdaari
              Ker aashiqoun ki apnay hountoun say kaamgaari

English:=== No one in the world is lovelier than you
                  But you're most cruel; it's also true
                                                -

Persian:  Baa aashiqaan e baidil ta chand naaz o ishwa
              Bar baidilaan e miskeen ta kay jafa o khaari
Urdu:      Baa aashiqaan e baidil kaisay yeh naaz o isway
              Bar baidilaan e miskeen kab tak jafa o khaari

English:=== In hurting your lovers you take such pride
                  Your scorn for them you cannot hide
                                                  -

Persian:  Ta chand humchu chashmat dar ain e naatawaani
              Ta chand humchu zulfat dar taab o baiqaraari
Urdu:      Khaabeeda aankh kab tak daiway gi naatawaani
              Zulf e siyaah kab tak rakhhay gi baiqaraari

English:=== Your cruel malice does never cease
                  And your restive lovers can have no peace
                                                  -

Persian:  Jooray keh az to deedam, darday keh az to burdam
              Gar shammaay badaani, shaayad keh rehm aari
Urdu:      Jour o sitam maen taeray dard o alam bohat haen
              Aa ker kabhee toe zaalim ker maeri ghamgusaari

English:=== But your hapless lovers you couldn't disdain
                  If only you could feel their grief and pain
                                                  -

Persian:  Az baada e wisaalat gar jurraay banoosham
              Ta zinda am nawarzam aain e hooshiaari
Urdu:      Ger baada e labaan ka mil jaay aek jurraa
              Mit jaay jaan o dil say aain e houshiaari

English:=== Oh, how I wish you would come to me
                  And from my sorrow you would set me free
                                                  -

Persian:  Dar hijr maanda boodam, baad e saba rasaaneed
              Az boostaan e waslat boo e umeedwaari
Urdu:      Furqat ki naaumeedi maen baagh e wasl say ik
              Laaie saba sahardam boo e umeedwaari

English:=== For without you, darling, I cannot cope
                  I've lost my courage; I have no hope
                                                  -

Persian:  Dukkan e aashiqi ra bisyaar maaya baayad
              Dilha e humchu aatish, chashmaan e roodbaari
Urdu:      Bazaar e aashiqi maen sarmaaya aashiqoun ka
              Dilha e aatisheen o chashmaan e ashkbaari

English:=== My eyes have tears; my heart has fire
                  And as you can see, my condition is dire
                                                  -     
             
Persian:  Garcheh ba boo e waslat dar hashr zinda gardam
              Sar bar niyaaran az khaak az roo e sharmsaari
Urdu:      Gercheh karay gi mehshar maen boo e wasl zinda
              Uthnay mujhay na day ga yeh baar e sharmsaari

English:  I sometimes think it would be neat
              Per chance in Heaven if we did meet
                                                      -

Persian:  Ma bandaeem o aajiz, to khaajaay o qaadir
              Gar meekashi ba zooram, gar meekushi ba zaari
Urdu:      Banda maen taera aajiz, too khaaja aur qaadir
              Jaan bakhshay baa tabassum, jaan laway yaa ba zaari

English:=== But now I feel very humble and weak
                  And I'm unhappy and my outlook bleak
                                                      -

Persian:  Aakhir tarehhamay kun bar haal e zaar e HAFIZ
              Ta chand naaumeedi, ta chand khaaksaari
Urdu:      Ker haal e zaar e HAFIZ pay rehm too Khuda ra
              Kab tak yeh naaumeedi, kab tak yeh khaaksaari

English:=== But HAFIZ says this too shall pass
                  And I'll get out of this morass
