                                                  Two Sides of the Coin

The green dress hanging on the hook happily,
A different side to her.
Black earrings on the dresser, unused,
Caution lost.
This night would be a fracture in the surface.
The voice speaks.

'That dress is not appropriate'
hearing the sneer,
she growls.
turns on the hoover.
time is close.
'You'll look ridiculous'

Table set for lunch.
pasta is cooked with oregano.
'Don't you think you've eaten enough'
knuckles white on her waist.
can't hear, can't hear, can't hear, can't hear.
hairbrush flows through blonde tendrils.

Night leaks over the poplars,
hazy grass smells drift along,
she emerges confident.
voice rises.
'Even if you walk in there with your head up, you're not fooling anyone'
Only after the tumbler smashes against the mauve wall, does she realise that she threw it.

Mirrorball slashes the dance floor with multicoloured shards,
yellows, blues, pinks and reds criss cross over the old floorboards.
eyes watch her arrive.
friends smile in approval.
above the music, the voice returns.
'You'll never be one of them'
As the men persuade their partners to the floor,
heat rises,
she spies her way,

Eggshell tiles are cold on her neck.
eyes closed she waits.
A condescending laugh replaces the stillness,
She locks eyes with her nemesis.
no battle, but weakness.
'You're pathetic'
the snarl echoes and bounces on tiles.
revulsion simmering, she stalked closer to her opponent.
palms resting on the sink, she leans in
'You're in here too'
now she can smirk.
her reflection cannot find a clever comeback.
