Verbs Lesson Five Homework
DISCUSSION TOPIC Other than writing, in what jobs are the active voice and action verbs more useful. I think that both teachers and politicians would benefit from selecting strong verbs instead of weaker ones. A strong, active voice would ‘’get their message’ across more effectively. ASSIGNMENT For each sentence, identify whether the example is in the passive or active voice AND then, revise the active voice sentences to be passive and the passive voice sentences to be active. 1. The whole student council elects the president. Active – the whole student council will be electing the president. 2. A terrible accident has been prevented by Melissa’s quick thinking. Passive – Melissa’s quick thinking prevented a terrible accident. 3. The leading role was played brilliantly by the ingénue. Passive – The young ingenue played the leading role brilliantly. 4. The film was unfavorably reviewed by the critic. Passive – The critic gave the film an unfavorable review. 5. A gas station attendant recognized the elusive criminal. Active – The elusive criminal was recognized by the gas station attendant. 6. At first, the teacher’s advice was ignored by the student. Active – In the beginning, the students will ignore the teacher’s advice. 7. The minister usually leads the Wednesday evening discussion. Active – The Wednesday evening discussions will usually be led by the minister. 8. Children of many different cultures play that game. Active – Children around the world will be playing that game. 9. The contributions to jazz music by Louis Armstrong are appreciated by all. Active – The contributions to jazz music Louis Armstrong made will be appreciated by coming generations, 10. Charles Dickens wrote the novel Great Expectations. Active -- The Victorian novel, ‘Great Expectations’ was written by Charles Dickens.
