TIANANMEN
Fourth June in the year nineteen eighty nine Saw the end of five decades’ suppression When Poland after fifty years held A free election to choose its leaders. Peoples’ triumph in East Europe was matched On this day in China by a vile fall When thousands of students were massacred, Protesting in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. From fifteenth April till the Fourth of June, When tanks rolled on silent, unarmed students, This movement lasted for full seven weeks. Though killed on the ground, it lives in the hearts For justice, democracy, human rights Heart of man has been fighting, always fights. • Written in pentameter, 10 syllables per line.
