“Hey Andi,” Janice plopped down beside her friend in the grass. They’d met in the same park for lunch every Thursday since they graduated from high school.
“Wow,” Andrea slipped out of her flip flops. “Looks like you’ve had a day already.” “Must be nice to have a day off in the middle of the week.” Janice smiled and opened the white paper bag she carried. It was her turn to bring lunch, so she’d stopped for some pastrami on rye from their favorite deli. Musing about how she would miss that deli, and her lunches with Andi, she opened the bag and handed her friend a sandwich. “It is,” Janice took the sandwich and ripped into a bag of chips, setting it between the two of them. “You look pensive.” “Nah, just thinking.” They both laughed. It was a favorite line they’d heard in a movie years ago, but the joke never got old. Janice leaned back on her elbow, holding her sandwich in the other hand. She looked up to the cloudless sky. “What about?” Andi opened her sandwich and took a bite. “That plane up there.” Janice pointed to a white streak left behind a jet. “You’re thinking about that plane? Nice, Jan.” “No, I mean the people on it.” “What about them?” “Did you ever wonder who they are leaving, or who they are going to see?” “Not really.” They filled the silence with eating and just enjoying being together. Only Janice knew there were only four more Thursdays they would enjoy each other’s company. “Weird, isn’t it? I mean, when you think about it that way?” Janice said, grabbing a handful of chips. “I guess so.” Andi stopped eating and leaned back with her friend. “You know, I don’t travel much, but, you know, I guess they are all going somewhere for a reason.” “I wonder if the reason is good enough.” “You’re getting philosophical over pastrami and chips? Summer heat getting to you?” Andi pushed Janice’s elbow out from under her, flopping her to the ground. “You’re such a geek.” “I know,” Janice smiled from her prone position and wished these days would never end.
