                                          Ghazal 288


Persian:  Salaamay chu boo e khush e aashnaaie
              Badaan mardum e deeda e rooshnaaie
Urdu:      Salaam aek misl e boo e aashnaaie
              Tujhay mardum e deeda e rooshnaaie

English:=== Oh, how I salute and idolize
                  Those charming, enchanting, bewitching eyes
                                                -

Persian:  Namibeenam az humdamaan heetch bar ja
              Dilam khoon shud az ghussa, saaqi kujaaie
Urdu:      Hua khoon dil ka, pila saaqia mai
              Rahi humdamoun maen na ab aashnaaie

English:=== I also miss old friends of mine
                  My heart is bleeding; O give me some wine
                                                -

Persian:  Zay koo e mughaan roo magardaan keh aan ja
              Farooshand muftaah e mushkilkushaaie
Urdu:      Ba koo e mughaan ja kay daekho keh kaisay
              Wo baichay haen muftaah e mushkilkushaaie

English:=== I think I should go to the keeper of the bar
                  And ask for his help, for he's a star
                                                -

Persian:  Uroos e jahaan garcheh dar hadd e husn ast
              Zay had meeburad sheewa e baiwafaaie
Urdu:      Uroos e jahaan gercheh baihad haseen hay
              Hay baihad bhee us ki mager baiwafaaie

English:=== The worldly pleasures are full of traps
                  In which are caught the best of our chaps
                                                -

Persian:  Mai e sofiafgan kuja meefarooshand
              Keh dar taabam az dast e zohd e riyaaie
Urdu:      Mai e soofiafgan haheen say khareedo
              Naheen hum maen ab taab e zohd e riyaaie

English:=== And though he says he's a man of God
                  In fact our sheik is a pious fraud
                                                -

Persian:  Rafeeqaan chunaan ahd e sohbat shakistand
              Keh gooie naboodast khud aashnaaie
Urdu:      Rafeeqoun nay torha hay yuin ahd e sohbat
              Kabhee jaisay hum say na thi aashnaaie

English:=== And a man who calls himself a friend
                  We find on him we cannot depend
                                                -

Persian:  Mara gar to bagzaari aey nafs e tamay
              Basay baadshaahi kunam dar gadaaie
Urdu:      Nikal jaay laalach agar dil say maeray
              Karoun maen shahinshaahi andar gadaaie

English:=== But the biggest problem we have is greed
                  It's one thing in the world that we do not need
                                                -

Persian:  Biaamoozadat keemia e sa'adat
              Zay humsohbat e bad judaaie, judaaie
Urdu:      Milay mujh ko ik keemya e sa'adat
              Jo ho sohbat e bad say maeri judaaie

English:=== So the evil in us we should try to nix
                  And with those who're bad we shouldn't mix
                                                -

Persian:  Darooday chu noor e dil e paarsaayaan
              Badaan sham e khilwatgeh e paarsaaie
Urdu:      Dua misl e noor e dil e paasaayaan
              Tujhay sham e khilwatgeh e paarsaaie

English:=== We should try to help the poor and the meek
                  And the company of the mystics we ought to seek
                                                  -

Persian:  Dil e khasta e mun garash himmatay neest
              Nakhaahad zay sangeendilaan moomyaaie
Urdu:      Hay majrooh o khasta agercheh meray dil
              Too sangeendiloun say na lay momyaaie

English:=== And let's avoid the proud and the rude 
                  And have nothing to do with the cruel and the crude
                                                -

Persian:  Makun HAFIZ az joor e gardoun shikaayat
              Cheh daani to aey banda kaar e Khudaaie
Urdu:      Shikaayat na ker jour e gardoun ki HAFIZ
              Too banda hay, jaanay na kaar e Khudaaie

English:=== And HAFIZ says we shouldn't complain
                  And thank our Lord again and again
                                            ====
