Padding softly through the gently waving grasses, the enticing sent sends a thrill of excitement through my veins. Quickly I reign in, my overpowering instinct to give immediate chase. The sun warms my chilled golden fur coat. My muscles coil as I prepare. Unaware they graze growing closer to where I lay. I can taste the tangy warmth as I spring forward sprinting with every ounce of energy. The focus of my eyes never leaving the throat, as I leap through the air and land with a graceful pounce that topples the fast running deer to the ground. A fierce roar escapes from me as I victoriously close my teeth round the neck bringing warmth trickling into my mouth. It lays still, its breath gone, and I am now able to feast. Fully satisfied I leave the remains for the annoying birds and pad stealthily back to the high ground among the rocks, where the sun will warm me until I hunt again. Written for the "Animal Mania Writing Contest". June of 2009. Prompt - 1. A predator after its prey. (Any type of animal is fine for this.) 23 lines of physical text. The results may never be known. However, entering the contest did give me a different point of view for writing. I would like to know who won, eventually.
