The Story of One

1. The Kingdom
There was no fear in his eyes, only doubt. His composure was stern and emotionless, and his gaze never faltered as he looked over the field of fallen enemies and comrades.  He turned and held his hand up against his chest. Feeling the coldness of the metals and ribbons studded upon his jacket, he stood as stone. No one man could have the kind of madness that flooded through his head. No one man could hold a kingdom as he did. The kingdom he sacrificed everything he had ever known and loved for. He was a proud leader but in spite of all he accomplished, it was for not. In his kingdom there Lied only destruction, and certain blackness in the hearts of those who resided within the great iron walls. But nevertheless, he held the kingdom. No. he held it up to let it fall.
He finally turned and faced his men at his side. And spoke.
“War. The epitome of all mankind’s worst fears, and greatest ideas forced into one. What is the meaning of our insanity? Why must we eliminate our differences instead of befriend them?”
His eyes were starting to burn as he held his brothers shield in his left hand, and cradled his father’s helm in the other.
His men could start to see the sincere breakdown in their leader’s eyes. They had stood by him as he defended his waged war for peace. Their homeland, their lives, their families have all suffered. but they have survived because of him. This proud warrior before them, this ultimate being. He has brought them peace time and time before but is now beginning to grow weary in his age. Hope is beginning to fade.
