Won first place, A Flicker of Madness weekly contest. “Come with me Jenny. I want to check out that old cemetery up on widows hill, but I don’t want to go alone.” “I think you’re crazy, Craig, for wanting to go to that cemetery. Haven’t you heard that it’s haunted?” Craig was pulling Jenny from the front porch and opening the car door for her to get in. “You knew that before you said that you would be my girl. Now come on, it’ll be fun. I promise to keep you safe. I won’t let anything happen to you.” “Okay, but we aren’t staying for long.” She climbed into the car. Craig was already opening up his door. * * * * * The car suddenly stopped a few yards from widows hill. “Why did you stop the car so far away from the cemetery?” Jenny asked. Craig was turning the key in the ignition, but the car wouldn’t start. “I didn’t stop the car. It did it all by its self. And it won’t start.” He paused while he looked out the windshield. He could see the fence of the cemetery. “Come on. We can walk the rest of the way. I can see the fence up ahead.” Darkness had descended quickly and mist was raising up from the ground, making it difficult to see it. As they neared the cemetery, the night became darker still and the air hung heavy making it tough to breath. The mist was still rising, it was up to Jenny’s knees. The gate creaked as Craig swung it open. Jenny snatched Craig’s arm and held on with a death grip. “I’m scared Craig. Can we go home now?” “Jenny we just got here. Let’s check it out.” Spider webs clung to the old tombstones. The trees looked dead with bare limbs hanging low to ground. “What was that? Jenny whispered as she pointed. “I heard something next to that tree.” “Let’s go check it out.” Jenny clung to Craig’s back as they approach the tree. At the tree Craig turned to Jenny, “See there is nothing he . . . .” His words trailed off and Jenny screamed. The tree limbs appeared to be dancing even though there was no breeze to move them. Craig looked around and all the limbs on all the trees were dancing. “What the hell?” Craig asked as jenny’s grip became tighter still. “I feel like we are being watched,” Jenny whispered. They turned around and behind them were five bright lights dancing in the air. The lights moved and closely encircled them as they danced. “Let’s get out of here,” Jenny cried. They slowly walked toward the gate, the dancing lights moved with them every step. The lights now stood between them and the gate. Word count 459
