'What is your favorite color and why?' is one of the strangest writing prompts I have ever encountered, but also one of the most cliche. I have also found that, at first, there wasn't much to write about. My favorite color is blue and it's my favorite color because it is.
No one can really truly explain why their favorite color is their favorite color. Blue is one of hte most abundant colors on the earth. The sky is blue along with the major bodies of water. Also, most newborn's eyes are blue, but that does not make blue my favorite color. There are many shades of blue, but not all shades are my favorite. I think that navy blue is an awful color or any dark blue in general. Light blue and just plain blue is more appealing. There is also the factor of where to draw the line of what is actually blue. When does blue become turquoise or teal? The two main factors that I believe pertain directly to why someone's favorite color is their favorite color is environment and appeal. The most common color affiliated with a baby boy is blue and the most common color affiliated with a baby girl is pink. The parents automatically put their child or children into a world of these genderized colors. I grew up with blue all around me and had blue carpeting in my room. My sister had a darker pink carpeting in her room. Almost my entire environment while growing up was focused around the color blue, but this didn't mean it was my favorite color. My environment may have had been blue, but it had nothing to do with my appeal to it. Blue appeals to me more than any other color whether or not I was around the color. My carpeting could have been white and I would have most likely still like the color blue. In fact, I hated the shade of blue my carpet was. Overall, someone's favorite color depends on personal interests defined by their environment and appeal to each color. Once someone has a favorite color, it may not be their favorite for life, but may very well change during their lifetime as with many other things.
