The Music Lesson
I wrote this for one of my students who wanted to be a musician and loved The Spice Girls.

“Kaylyn , would you come in here for a moment please?” Dad called.

Uh-oh, Kaylyn thought.  He sounds really serious.  I wonder what I did?

“Yes Dad?” she answered.

“Honey, did you enter a contest on the radio?” he asked.

Kaylyn’s heart raced.  “I did!  Did I win something?” she asked.

“Well, it looks like you did.  You won first prize!  We all get to go to LA to meet the Spice Girls and...”  Dad went on, but Kaylyn didn’t hear him.  She was screaming!

“I can’t believe it!  Wait until I tell everybody at school!  When do we go?”

“We go next week.  I’ll have to get time off from work, but I think I can arrange it.”  Dad headed off to make the arrangements.  Just then the phone rang and Kaylyn answered it.

“May I speak to Kaylyn Rose?”

“This is Kaylyn.”

“This is Sporty Spice.  I’m going to be your hostess next week when you visit, because I understand I’m your favorite.  Is that all right with you?”

Kaylyn was speechless.  Her voice just wouldn’t work.  “Hello?  Kaylyn are you still there?” she heard.

“I’m here!” she finally managed.  “Yes!  That will be fine.”

Sporty Spice laughed.  “Great!  I’ll meet you at the studio, then.  We’ll spend the day together.  I’ll see you then.  Bye!”

Kaylyn stood and looked at the phone in her hand for a long time.  Wow!  I just talked to Sporty Spice!  We’re going to spend the day together.  Holy cow!

The days until the trip went slowly, but finally they were on their way.  At the airport in Los Angeles they were met by a huge black limo.

“This trip is already cool,” said Kaylyn.  “Boy I’m glad I won!”

“So are we,”  said her younger brother Cory.  Kristen was busy watching the sites from the limo window.

When they arrived at the studio, only Kaylyn was allowed to stay.  The rest of the family headed off to Disneyland, so they didn’t mind.

“Hi Kaylyn!  Welcome to LA,” said Sporty Spice.

“You’re Sporty Spice!” said Kaylyn.

“Well, yeah, I am,” she grinned.  “So what do you say, you want to come listen to us sing?  I could introduce you to our keyboard player too.”

Kaylyn followed Sporty Spice to a studio where all the Spice girls were practicing.

“Girls, this is Kaylyn.  She’s going to hang out with us today.  She’s the one that won the contest.  I’m her favorite.” Sporty made a silly face and everyone laughed.

“Hi Kaylyn”  “Hey Kaylyn.”  Each of the Spice Girls greeted her.

“Kaylyn, come here,” Sporty Spice called.  “I want you to meet Earl.”

Kaylyn said hello to a man with a long gray beard.  “Earl has played keyboard for some of the greats.  He’s one awesome musician.”

“Thanks, Sporty,” said Earl.  “Kaylyn, I hear you want to be a musician.”  Kaylyn just nodded her agreement.  “How about you sit here next to me during this next couple of songs.”

Kaylyn was happy to do that.  She watched as Earl’s hands made magic, and the Spice girls sang their beautiful songs.  It was really fun.
Sooner than she wished it was time to leave.  Kaylyn thanked Sporty Spice.  This had been the best day.
