Dirge
A villanelle, a lamentation rather than a nature poem

I thought of you today—it struck my soul,
blew through my mind like wind through broken chimes,
and echoed in my heart a mournful toll,

reverberating dimly. I console
myself in vain against these darker times.
I thought of you today—it struck my soul

to realize I never could control
or freeze one moment with my futile rhymes.
So echoes in my heart a mournful toll

of cold regret and longing to be whole,
of craving absolution for my crimes.
I thought of you today—it struck my soul

with doubt that I will ever reach my goal
to merit peace and end these wrenching climbs.
Last night, you echoed in my heart a toll

that all was well, but it was just a role
you play within my lying dreams sometimes.
I thought of you today—it struck my soul
and echoed in my heart a mournful toll.
