Guests in our house! What a great joy!
They’re coming to visit; a time to enjoy! Their stay would be short, or this we first thought. But we were so wrong, a lesson we’re taught. “Make yourself at home,” we said when they came. If we’d only known, that was their true aim! They thought we were servants, and they lived like kings. They made a huge mess of all of our things. Room service demanded, by these our guests. A four-star café couldn’t meet their requests! A chauffeur and valet and housekeeper, too, Became our jobs before their visit was through! Seven days now--we wish they would leave. Though, they are not ready to give a reprieve! Ten days and counting, serenity’s gone! “Why,” I ask, “Why did we open our home?” Two weeks approaching--Patience has left! With guests in our home, our peace is bereft! But, how in this world can I ask them to go Without seeming callous and making a foe? Guess we’ll get a hotel room for us to live in And we’ll leave our nest for the visitors’ den. Maybe without any butler or maid Their stay will be ended, so, for this I prayed. Maybe next time when they ask us to stay At their home, we’ll say “Yes”, and we can repay The selfish concern that was given to us. But, we’ll say “No, thank you. We don’t want a fuss.” For we know how visitors can make you feel And we want our friendship though strained now to heal. So, if we are looking for places to stay The Holiday Inn’s just a few miles away! 36 lines
