Emily Gilmer procrastinated about gettingher mother's birthday present. As she drovedown several streets she came uopn one she never frequented. There wasa store that loooked like a thrift store with new age items. She thoughtshe would find a unique gift for her mother there. A loud bell announced her entrance. A young woan petting a tiger striped cat appproached her.
"Hi. This Alice's Curisosity Shop. You'll find what you beed here. Feel free to look around. I'm June, she greeted herself.
Emily looked at all the unusual items and felt compelled to find something.
June was suddenly behind her and showed her a charm braclet. Emily studied it and it wouldn't be a personal gift. Then June put a red hat on emily's head.
"You look just likeyour grandmother in that hat." said June with sincerity.
Emily didn't wnt a redhat like her grandmother. She didn't want to be reminded of her grandmother's death. She was here for her mother.
"Sometime's its what you need that's important too," stated June in a suspisious voice. Emily looked at herself in the mirror and felt different. She knew sheshouldn't get it.
She continued looking around the store after June left her alone, her cat trailling her. She saw a beautiful pathwork quilt of violets and other flowers. She decided this wouldbe her mother'sgift. It was a cold Autumn and her mother's house was drafty. Shecalled for June and Alice appeared holding the tiger stripedcat. Alice wore a white gown and had darkly lined eyes. Alice told she was June also. emily just thought she meant by personality. Alice told her she couldn't return it and Emily payed $15.00 for it.
The day of her mother's birthday came and they had a small family diner party. Emily was last to leave. She told her mother about thestore where she got her quilt from and how the store disappeared. They reminiced over her grandmother who had died recently and laughed over memories and cried. Emily left feelinglike this would be the last time she'd see her mother.
A week went by with stormy weather and Emily was concerned overher mother who still lived alone. She called and got no answer so she drove over there. Hermother didn't answer the door neither. So Emily used her key. She found her mother peacefully dead under the blanket on her big easy chair. But the thing that terrified her the most wasa picture of her grandmother wearing a red hat when she was about Emily's age.
