LORA'S STORY


Waiting for her, I was so full of joy
I had no way to know what was in store
I just wanted a healthy girl or boy
To hold in my arms, to love and adore

Young and naive, I awaited the birth
Dreamed of sparkling blue eyes and golden hair
I laughed as my body increased in girth
I had not a worry, nary a care

I prayed my baby was healthy and strong
I believed my prayers would all come true
I didn't think anything could be wrong
I counted the days until I was due

Lora was born, my precious baby girl
And we all rejoiced in celebration
My body was tired, my head in a whirl
My heart full of love and adoration

The doctors soon came with their sad advice
They said Lora was born with Down's Syndrome
The story was short, but oh, so concise
Advising that we shouldn't take her home

Told us she'd go to an institution
She'd never walk or talk or go to school
I refused to accept their solution
Though everyone said that I was a fool

She was a special gift, a gift of love
We were so blessed, our lives richly enhanced
A special angel from heaven above
All who knew her were completely entranced

She went to school and learned to talk in 'sign'
She was a ray of sunshine on this earth
We know now that her life was God's design
And I thank Him for the gift of her birth

Her life was short but it enriched us all
She was a special gift, a gift of love
Such sweet memories I have to recall
Now she's at home with the angels above
