THE GUARDIAN

** #1441061 Not An Image **

My master spoke softly "stay by her side",
spoken with a firmness not easy to hide.
"A guardian you will be while she is alone,
for It is up to you to bring her safely home"

She kept me busy as she ran out to play,
the wonders she found caused me to pray
that somehow I could keep her from harm.
She was a good girl but a cause for alarm!

Running like the wind out toward the street,
I had to keep up with her small flying feet.
A hard tug on her dress brought her to a stop
and very soon she was off again, hippity-hop.

The neighbors had a dog that liked to chase
birds or kittens, or small girls dressed in lace.
I gave him a bark that soon changed his mind,
giving him a good reason, other trouble to find.

She bent to pick flowers, harmless enough.
Lost in her own world, until things got rough
and the thunder sounded a very loud warning,
We ran inside just before it started storming.

Exhausted, I lay down on the floor to sleep,
the child came to give a hug that was sweet.
Being a guardian has a special kind of reward.
One thing for certain, I'll never, ever, be bored.

The love that she gives me I will never forget,
though to her I may be just the old family pet.
From a dog's point of view, the job is no joke.
I took it to heart when ever my master spoke!
