Abigail’s Transformation

Poor Abigail sat watching from above
As dolphins leaped and frolicked on each wave.
She felt so trapped and she was weary of
How everyone had told her to be brave.

She loved the sea; she loved to sail and swim,
But all those joys were far behind her now.
An accident had made her future grim.
Just sitting here was all they would allow.

She sat and dreamed, her chair pulled to the rail.
Her twisted legs were covered up with fleece.
Within her mind, too breathless to exhale,
She swam and dived, delighting in release.

But when she did awaken, she was still
Within her wheelchair, trapped as just before.
She waited patiently each day until
At last, they took her down beside the shore.

She pushed herself up to the water’s edge
And squealed with joy as water drenched her feet.
Within her mind, she made a solemn pledge
To somehow find a way to leave this seat.

But soon, they took her back for therapy,
Then, gave her meds to help her fall asleep.
She murmured about living in the sea
And as she nodded off, began to weep.

That night, her dreams were quite intense and strange.
With voices, questions, chaos, pain, dismay …
It felt as if she’d undergone a change,
But then, the hurts and noises went away.

Her sleep until the morning, was serene
The rising sun helped her begin to wake.
Her eyes grew wide as she took in the scene.
First motionless, then she began to shake.

She was not in the clinic, in her bed!
She looked around, but all she saw was sand.
“I must be still asleep, or else I’m dead!”
But swiftly, she began to understand.

Somehow, her dreams were answered in the night.
No longer would she need that loathsome chair.
She knew now everything would be alright.
King Neptune sent an answer to her prayer!

She sat up in the spot where she had been.
With trembling hands, she touched a silver scale
And gently she caressed a silken fin,
Then saw instead of feet, her lustrous tail!

No longer trapped, she laughed aloud with glee!
She flipped her tail and dove into the foam.
No stupid chair, no doctors, she was free!
With dolphin escorts, Abigail went home.
