                                Ghalib Urdu 7


Urdu:  Dehr maen naqsh e wafa wajh e tasalli na hua
          Hay yeh wo lafz keh sharminda e ma'ani na hua

English:=== To the people devotion is a useless word
                  And fidelity sounds so totally absurd
                                            -

Urdu:  Sabza e khat say tera kaakul e sarkash na daba
          Yeh zamurrud bhee hareef e dam e afee na hua

English:=== To touch those locks I do not dare
                  So proud and haughty is her curly hair
                                            -

Urdu:  Maen nay chaha tha keh andooh e wafa say chhootoun
          Wo sitamger meray murnay pay bhee raazi na hua 

English:=== To kill my pain I wanted to die
                  But she wants me to live and cry and cry
                                              -

Urdu:  Dil guzargaah e khayaal e mai o saaghar hi sahi
          Ger nafas jaada e sermanzil e taqwa na hua

English:=== So to live with sorrow, I began to think
                  I should give up my piety and drink and drink
                                              -

Urdu:  Houn teray waada na kernay pay bhee raazi keh kabhee
          Gosh minnatkash e gulbaang e tasalli na hua

English:=== And if she doesn't promise to come back to me
                  It's no use insisting; I should just let it be         
                                              -

Urdu:  Kis say mehroomi e qismat ki shikaayat keejay
          Hum nay chaaha tha keh mur jaaen so wo bhee na hua

English:=== I shouldn't be complaining about my fate
                  And if I cannot die, I simply must wait
                                              -

Urdu:  Mur gaya sadma e yak junbish e lab say GHALIB
          Naatawaani say hareef e dam e eisaa na hua

English:=== So, GHALIB, with pain I have learnt to cope
                  And of my being revived there is no hope
                                            ====
