“The Doc said for you to stick this in your ear, Phil.”
“Come on, Carrots, that’s not funny.” “Maybe not, but I’m laughing.” “Ya, laugh at everything!” “Now, Phil, that’s not fair. You know I had to go through an act of congress to get you into this CPAiiC Experiment.” “Oh! Yah! Right! Let’s see…you picked up the phone, called the doctor, who called a doctor; was there more? Hey…what’s this contraption for anyway?” “The doctor said you are to place it in your ear, at night, for your sleep apnea. Yah see, he told me to have you stick it in your ear. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!” “Ouch! Honey, come here; will yah? Look at this; what’s wrong?” “Okay, the yellow dot…um, the directions say to put the yellow dot downward in the ear.” “Hey…that’s nice, feels comfortable...like it belongs. Think I could get used to this.” “I’m ti.redd…I’..m goo...iingg ta'a be..edd.” “Yy..oo..urr’re givin..g me th..ee yaaw..nns.” “I can’t help it, Carrots, ni…yyaaa…ght.” “Night, Darling.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “I’m your device; It’s important you listen to me…I help you breathe.” “Breathe…deep breaths…breathe deeply.” “Take a breath, breathe deep.” “My voice will help you dream; you will think you are awake.” “Wake up, time to get up. Remove the device when you get up.” “Wow! Amazing Carrots! I feel rested for a change. This little device is fan -tas-tic, IT’S SUPER! I didn’t wake up all night. I dreamed about being in space and walking on the ceiling…and I…good night, dear.” “Your dreams will be weird. I sound like someone you know.” “Nice, you feel rested dear. It’s nearly time to get up.” “Carrots I dreamed…I thought I was awake…but…last time…” “Yes, dear you are awake. It’s nearly time to get up.” “Carrots, stop saying stuff over and over… You did that in my dream. Why is the clock going backwards?” “Breathe in…deep breath, out…” “Carrots, stop shaking me.” “Breathe take a breath, breathe, inhale and exhale.” “Phil, you need to wake up, you are having some kind of reaction; Phil…Phil!” “Did you enjoy that dream?” “Breathe take a deep breath, inhale and exhale.” “Keep on dreaming.” “Carrots, get me awake, you are saying everything over…over again.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “Hello, Dr. Brendandale’s, office ” “Hi! This is Jane Buckets; my husband Philip is in the CPAiiC study. It’s his first night. He keeps calling out my name, but he won’t wake up even when I shake him. I’m afraid he’s having some kind of reaction.” “Can you hold?” “Yes.” “The doctor is dispatching an ambulance; she’s asking for your address.” “Oh, it’s 114 Centre Ct. How long?” “It might be twenty minutes. You okay?” “Yes, I think so; I’m just worried.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “Ma’am, we’re here about a Mr. Philip Buckets.” “Yes, come in, he’s…my husband’s in here.” “I’ll follow the ambulance.” “Oh, Ma’am, didn’t they tell you? We have orders to take him to the Cardin Care Unit in Willis County. The doctor will call you for an appointment.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “Hello! Yes, Dr. Brendandale…coming now? Good! Thanks, I’ll be here when they arrive.” “Phil, oh it’s good to see you. Thanks, guys!” “My papers, oh yah, here they are! Carry on. Thanks for the ride.” “What papers are those, Phil?” “Yah will see, Carrots.” “I would like to order a pizza before I get my shower and explain things to you.” “Sorry, Phil, our budget doesn’t support pizza.” “It’s to celebrate our good fortune.” “Good fortune? Phil, did they pay you for almost killing you?” “Of course they did, Carrot Top!” “Phil, you haven’t called me that in years, I’ve missed it.” “Yah begged me to stop. Remember?” “I know, but I didn’t really want you to. Are they going to stop the experiment, Phil?” “No, a puzzle about the device needed solving, I helped solve it for them, now they’re done with their research. They have some testing to do to prove what they’ve learned. See, I still have my device in my ear.” “I see, but...” “That’s the part of the solution they were missing. It seems when they removed the device from the subject he died in a little while, say, in a week or so.” “How, did they get lucky enough to figure this one out?” “Well, they didn’t, I did. Remember how well I liked the feeling of the device in my ear? I felt terrible when they removed it; it was like I’d lost my best friend, I didn’t want to go on without it. I begged and begged them to put it back. One doctor decided it was worth a try. The most wondrous thing happened, next.” “You went to sleep.” “Yah, how did you know?” “I didn’t, just a lucky guess.” “I went to sleep, and I didn’t have any more wild dreams, either. I slept so peaceful they could hardly wait to talk to me when I awoke. They put me through a ton of questions before they finally decided they knew enough. I was tired, but I felt great; the wonderful rest made me a new man, honey, no more tired days ahead for me. This device is out of this world!” “So, where did all the money come from? Did they reward you for solving their puzzle?” “Kind ‘a, they gave me a huge portion of the grant money; they only kept enough out for the testing. “And, if it isn’t finished, will you have to give all the money back?” “Well, that will remain a mystery, because I don’t plan on finding out. Now, WOMAN! Will yah stop with all this doubt, and be happy about our good fortune? I don’t want to hear another negative word on what if this or that happens; yah hear me?” “Of course, Phil, I hear you; you don’t have to shout. Now, get yourself a shower; the pizza will be here soon; you are one grand mess if I ever saw one.” “That’s my, Carrot Top, sassy as can be; where yah been, girl?” Word Count: 1000 Note: The first two lines enclose the only time of sleep. His dreams are wierd and he calls out in his sleep. The device tells him things and even mimics his wife's voice. The second and third divisions are separating different scenes which should help make the transition smoother.
