The lightning flashed during the heaviest thunderstorm of the season. Brandy sat huddled in the corner of the couch shivering from fright. She tried to concentrate on anything else besides the increasing crashes of thunder. A picture of a rainbow, a butterfly, a flower and then Hank, all flitted through her mind, but nothing could keep the fear at bay. She missed him so much and wondered if she would ever see him again. Her body shook even more at that thought, and she let out a small whimper.
The last time they were together his hands were so warm as they rubbed her back. She loved when his soft, gentle voice said her name. She rolled over and he stroked her belly, but then it happened again. His favorite “toy” went off and shattered their peaceful world. His calm demeanor instantly changed as he listened to a conversation unheard by Brandy. She knew that when he got like this it meant he would leave, and there was no way for her to stop him. On his way out, he looked back, smiled and told her, “Be good.”
She couldn’t even remember how long ago he had left. All she knew was that it seemed like forever. Suddenly she heard the keys in the door. She bound off the couch to greet him at the door.
“Oh, Brandy! I’m so glad to see you too! I missed you girl! Ok, ok, ok! Stop jumping!” Hank leaned down and petted Brandy while she licked his face. “I’m so sorry! I know how scared you get, but those babies don’t deliver themselves and they don’t wait for good weather.” Hank laughed as Brandy continued to lick him, and he knew that all would be forgiven with a good belly rub.
