I still can remember the day, you came to me.
I never will forget your red hair tied back.
You gave me a beer, and your hands softly
touched mine, I was full of sheer lack
of understanding, but that's just the way,
it goes, or so they say.

Well we hung around that joint all night.
Never did care to let the people go.
When I woke up that morning, the light
was so dark compared to those slow,
flickering lights in your eyes that swayed
in the moonlight but that's how I get payed.

It wasn't too far later, that we drove that car
up north to the only place you can be free.
I said if we ever went off again, I'd take you to a star.
Around you, and holding you, it's the only place I can be me.
The night before we crossed footsteps, I prayed
so that soon I could meet my love today.

I don't think we ever said we loved each other.
We never did need to confirm such a thing.
Our love was abstract, we didn't let lies smother
us; I can't believe how great were the wings
that you gave me, I can fly, but only when persuaded.
Driving up the way, we saw the Nashville Skyline parade.

We had a falling out, like often happens these days.
Id hoped and prayed, you'd forgive me, but I can understand why.
I don't now expect you to give shelter, just keep me at bay.
I don't know what to do, where to go, or even how to get by.
Just, please baby, understand, I never meant what I said.
I love you, but that don't matter now, the deal's been dead.

When we got to the city of stars, we got a room,
and decided to stay here a while in company.
We heard a guy on a country record softly croon
at you, you thought it was me, in a hootenany.
Oh, honey baby, I knew we shouldn't have delayed.
We shoulda packed up and left when the hound dog bayed.

Somehow I think it would have been much better,
if we'd never had met, the kids couldn't have been hurt such.
They would have been spared what we put on them to suffer.
But it's funny how things never turn out how you thought so much.
That room in the Chelsea Hotel was nice, but it wasn't worth the price.
Life is easy, life is hard, just roll some cards, roll some dice.

How can you forgive me, I can't be, shouldn't be.
Don't deny your anger, for it is righteous, and just.
Find a perfect match, live and be carefree.
But take it from me, just do what you feel you must.
I can't do much other than go walk down the rest of the way.
Maybe someday down the line, the sun will rise another day.

A thousand years ago, some lover from that time
sang the same song I sing to you now,
you can make a difference, you're worth more than a dime.
If I were a peasant and saw you but once, I'd lower my head and bow.
Oh, oh, pretty woman, please go whence from my doorway,
oh, oh, beautiful, leave me, find some one new and so stay.

They say love is eternal, that love is forever.
They tell me that to be in love is to be blind.
Those souls were quiet and also clever.
You can kill, they say now and then, when one is kind.
Oh, how I wish things could be as they were.
But, oh how I know things can never go back in time.
Please don't go about reporting I am under the weather.
You never gave me shelter, I never offered you wine.
Maybe things would be best if others were dead.
Now, I shall go rest, and leave the rest for you, I go to my bed.
