Thinking about the days gone by, I still can’t believe the fact that you are gone forever. It hurts, it really does. I keep thinking of the time when we were together. Those lovely days, spent talking about us, only us. I can’t figure out what was lacking in me. I was always supportive, patient and as you once said ‘all that you wanted’ in your life. You said that you would love me until you die. So what went wrong?

Remembering the day when we met brings a smile to my face, even now. You were sitting on the oh-so-familiar desk by now, pretending to read, though I knew your eyes were on me, like always. You came up to me and handed over the books. While I was issuing them, I thought I would give you a smile. Well, this was the moment you had been waiting for. You extended your hand, introduced yourself and I reciprocated. We went for coffee and endless chatting sessions followed. Soon, the time came, when you went down on your knees, and told me that you wanted to spend the rest of your life with me. Of course, I relented, to the love I saw in your eyes and felt with your touch. But, oh, I wonder now, how could you have fooled me throughout and why!

I feel jealous, for you are with her now. I'm starting to believe it should be illegal to deceive a woman's heart. It’s not fair, you know. Why did you leave me? I question for hours and days and weeks, yet no answer comes through.

It had been four months since we were together, and happily so, I must say. We were shopping in the mall when someone screamed your name. Before I could even turn to see, she was all over you, kissing and hugging. I couldn’t understand. I turned to peer into your eyes but they weren’t looking into mine. They were deeply lost in her face, and you held her lovingly in your arms, while I gazed on. Finally, you remembered me and introduced her as your best friend when she corrected you to say ‘girlfriend’. You turned away and couldn’t look into my eyes. You changed the topic and waved me goodbye. She wanted you to meet her parents, who were in town and you said ‘sorry’ to me and said you will call. It never came. I am waiting for the phone to ring, to hear your voice and to have you back in my life. But you are gone, forever.

I tried calling you but you evaded my calls, refused to meet me. That ‘goodbye’ in the mall was the final one. I wish you had at least said something else. You don’t even know the meaning of the words ‘I’m sorry’. They were mere words flung at me that day. Did they mean you were leaving me while I thought you were just going for a walk? How cowardly of you! You hid away; you couldn’t face me! But I love you, anyway. I can’t seem to get you out of my mind and my heart. You still reside there. Tell me, what shall I do? And that’s why I say, it should be illegal to deceive a woman's heart, because there’s no cure to it, no remedy.

I wonder if I will ever be able to trust now. With a broken heart and shaken faith, it’s hard to look ahead and move on. It’s a struggle each day to get out of bed. I drag myself to work. Yeah, once something I loved has become mere work now. It’s difficult to erase memories, to stand behind the table, looking at the desk you once sat at. Empty now or filled by another, it makes my heart bleed and moves me to tears. But well, here I am, trying to cope, finding my solace in the smell of books and the hope that one day, I too, like you, will forget. One day, I too, will move on.
